“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
That’s my view. Period.
Here are the reasons why I believe it’s the 2nd Amendment that provides Americans the ability to keep our country great:
Guns Are A Deterrent
It can be difficult to measure the number of times gun ownership has prevented a crime without a shot being fired. However, it’s apparent that simply having this right keeps many threats at bay. Most of the time, you don’t even have to use your guns. Just having a gun present is often enough to deter people from harming you, your family or taking away your essential freedoms.
Taking Away Guns Is Not The Solution To Mental Illness
The issue of mental illness and its impact on mass shootings presses heavily on my mind. However, the solution to eliminating these issues does not lie in taking away our guns. After all, if a state such as California can suffer one of these tragedies despite restrictive gun control measures, it’s clear that this isn’t the answer.
I am certain that it is possible to reconcile these hardships while still maintaining our constitutional rights to protect our families and loved ones. I believe that having the right to bear firearms is what gives Americans the ability to take the initiative when danger presents itself and stop these horrific acts from occurring.
I Carry A Firearm To Protect The Ones I Love
I stand to uphold the Second Amendment. I’ve held a concealed carry permit since I was 21 years old.
I have this permit so I can protect myself and most importantly those individuals whom I love. While I don’t personally carry a gun with me as I move through society, there are those who do embrace this right. This is good. This ensures a cautious but open state of mind since we’re assured that we are empowered to protect our way of life. The ability to protect ourselves with firearms helps each of us uphold the freedoms we enjoy as Americans.
The Supreme Court Supports Gun Rights
In the Supreme Court case Heller v. District of Columbia, the Supreme Court ruled that every mentally healthy adult has the right to keep and bear arms for the use of protection. This right is independent of a citizens’ affiliation with a militia. The independent nature of the 2nd Amendment is pivotal for our ability to protect ourselves and our families against anyone who would elect to do us harm. Again, even simply having a gun is enough to deter unwanted situations. This court ruling testifies to the importance of our rights as Americans to protect ourselves by carrying a gun.
Owning and keeping guns is the right of every mentally healthy American citizen. This right gives us the ability to protect our freedoms, our beliefs, and ultimately our quality of life. Without the protections of the 2nd Amendment, we would be unable to maintain our freedoms to the same degree that we currently enjoy them. This is why defending our gun rights is such a big priority to me.
